Strategy
Our Business is centered around selecting and providing quality racehorses that are competitive on raceday, selling shares in these horses to form partnerships and then ensure that you have a rewarding and enjoyable experience with us throughout your horses racing career.
We also form breeding partnerships where you can purchase a share in a broodmare and bred yourself a racehorse.(Details are listed in Breeding opportunities)
The Horses
Each year ATB secure yearlings from the major sales or privately from horse studs in Australia and New Zealand to syndicate into shares and race with our selected trainers. We are very selective on breeding /pedigree, body conformation, and whom we purchase from. We are looking for superior breeds from proven breeding grounds. We strive to offer value for money and offer these horses to the public with a reasonable markup. We specialize in fillies as they have a residual value at the end of their racing career to breeders. (For example, Skewiff purchased at $20,000, won $520,000 in prizemoney and was sold to a breeder at auction for $450,000.)
Shares
We advertise all of our horses in 5% or 10% shares, however smaller shares are often available, where smaller shareholders can participate in a small syndicate through our operation or with their own friends. You may purchase a 10% interest and involve 10 friends for 1% each and form your own syndicate- we provide all the guidance and paperwork to assist you in this process. Racing Victoria register syndicates for $275.
ATB retain one share in every horse they offer thus standing behind our product and judgement and managing the racing partnership with you and the trainer.
Training
We leave the training strategy to our team of dedicated and professional trainers who are all high achievers and specialists in their fields. They include Darren Weir(Vic), Mark Kanavagh(Vic), Peter Moody(Vic), Jarod McLean(Vic), Robert Smerdon(Vic), David Jolly(SA) and David Brunton(Tas). If a key decision has to be made such as contesting an interstate race, paying a large entry fee, gelding or retiring, all owners will be consulted and a decision is reached based on the majority view.
Insurance
Owners have the option to insure their outlay with our insurers. Insurance covers your purchase outlay(net of GST) against death, not injury. We arrange this with the insurers who specialise in the equine industry. All insurance policies run for a 12 month period. Generally rates are less than 5% of the purchase price.
After Purchase
After making your purchase, ATB works with each of their trainers to provide you with all the relevant and timely information on the progress of your horse to ensure that you are keep up to date on the progress.
Generally the horses are broken in immediately after the sales then turned out for 2 months and then go into training for their first preparation. After 8 weeks they are spelled again and its back to training to see which ones have early speed and ability for the 2 yr old races and which ones need to be saved for the 3 yr old races.
Communication
We shall be emailing you regularly with progress reports, loading trainer interviews and barrier jumpouts onto our website in the members section which is password protected for owners only and to your mobile phone. Click here for a sample video interview.
When your horse is entered and accepts for a race , ATB will email you the entries on entry day and the final field on acceptance day, and then closer to the big race, the trainers thoughts after the horse has its final workout prior to raceday( this will be via email or mobile phone text.)
You are also welcome to contact the trainers direct for an update.
Visiting your horse
Owners can visit their horses at the spelling farm or the trainers stables at anytime by making an appointment. You can simply see them in their box and give them a pat or a carrot, or watch them work early in the morning or attend the jumpouts and trials. We also hold regular open days with our trainers at their complexs and at race courses which are advertised on our website and newsletter, which allow you to see your horse and to get to know us and your trainer.
Naming your horse
All owners are invited to submit a name for their new purchase when they complete the registration papers for the horse, and 10 names are drawn and submitted to the Registrar of Racehorses for registration and naming.
Raceday
Once your horse is officially named , we will advise you that you can apply for your (Victorian)owners gold card. The Owners card allows you free entry to the races when your horse is racing and has benefits including a free race book and drink voucher. (Click here to register your owners card).
On special days, we book luncheon tables for the owners to share in a memorable day together.
Accounts
All accounts are sent to the registered owners or syndicate manager directly from the trainer, vet or spelling farm on a monthly basis.
Prizemoney
As ATB keeps a share and manages the horse, all prizemoney is transferred by the appropriate racing body(RVL, STC etc) to our Account. The relevant prizemoney paperwork is emailed to all owners and the prizemoney cheques are drawn and mailed to each owner at the end of each month, ensuring full transparancy. ATB does not charge any management fees to our owners for ongoing services that are provided.
